Collection: JOHANNA DUMET
Johanna Dumet's (*1991) works are characterized by an expressive use of color and popular as well as familial themes. Painted in the technique that radiates the scenery in its entirety. Quickly applied brushstrokes that do not get lost in details but reinforce the pure forms of the objects convey an auspicious carelessness.
It is her own narrative and an expressive response to her surroundings that Dumet instinctively puts on canvas. Her powerful works raise questions of identity, exclusion, and belonging. Dumet works with familiar references, with promising subjects that instinctively engage herself and the viewer. In her table scenes, for example, as well as in her handbag series, Dumet works with the question of the icons of our time, the consumer behavior associated with them, and further, the role attributions in our society. Nevertheless, her oil paintings are to be seen as a positive affirmation of life. Thus, her table scenes can almost be read as scenes of longing, emphasizing a sense of community and dreaming of carefree days. Her approach to her work recalls the expressive, informal painting of the 1980s, shifted to the now. Dumet paints confidently, fearlessly, and thus joins above all the canon of contemporary female artists who no longer question themselves and their position on the art market, but loudly demand attention.
Johanna Dumet, born 1991 in Gueret, France, lives and works in Berlin.
